I took this photo on my way to work one morning, when the coolness of the fall air met the still-warm waters of the Mississippi and the city was enveloped in a blanket of fog. A deer, coming up from the river bluff, stood at attention by the side of the road. I love my neighborhood, high on the bluff.
For my guests, I have a big binder with dozens of professionally-produced maps and guides. I also stuff the binder with coupons, menus from local restaurants, and my own hand-compiled notes. For an artist couple from Chicago, I created a list of interesting galleries. Want to see the eagle’s nest 2 blocks away? I drew a map for that. Want to walk to the farmer’s market? Mapped out. Want a nice 4-mile running route? In the binder.
When I travel, I want to get to know the place like the locals do. Turns out, I’m not the only one who thinks that way.
